2023 Flight of the Dove Event Attracts 274 Cyclists from SC, NC, Georgia, & Texas

On Saturday, August 5, cyclists from South Carolina and neighboring states gathered in Laurens County for the 18th annual Flight of the Dove ride. Organized by VIA Health Partners, founded as Hospice of Laurens County, this event has been a tradition since 2006. Drawing riders from many other states, the Flight of the Dove has become the organization’s most significant local fundraiser, supporting the compassionate care and services provided by the VIA Health Partners Laurens County branch.

This year’s event was very successful with 274 participants raising over $37,000.

The Flight of the Dove features three distinct routes to cater to riders of all levels: a metric century (62 miles), a 30-mile ride, and a 14-mile leisure ride. Additionally, a 50-mile variation of the metric century was offered to provide even more options for participants.

Repeat riders participating in the event know it to be a well-organized, challenging, and fun event, for cyclists from all walks of life. The SAG-supported rides include well-stocked rest stops along the routes, ensuring riders’ comfort and safety throughout the journey. The event concluded with lunch for all participants.

Nancy Cole, the Director of Special Events at VIA Health Partners, shared her thoughts on the event, "Flight of the Dove is a popular bike ride that brought cyclists from 5 states to participate in a well-organized, challenging, fun bike ride. The ride benefits the compassionate care and services provided by the VIA Health Partners Laurens County branch office (founded as Hospice of Laurens County.) Hospice has touched many of the families who participated in the event. They ride or volunteer to honor the memory of their loved ones and support hospice care in our community. What amazed me the most with Flight of the Dove, was the tremendous outpouring of support by the local community through sponsorships, donations, and volunteering. The commitment of volunteers was incredible!”

This year, the Flight of the Dove attracted 274 riders, coming from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, and New York. The event raised an impressive $37,000, a testament to the sponsors and riders’ commitment to the cause.

Flight of the Dove is not just about cycling; it’s about coming together as a community to support hospice care in the region. The VIA Health Partners Laurens County branch office, formerly known as Hospice of Laurens County, provides essential end-of-life care and support to patients and their families, making their journey more comfortable and dignified. The event’s proceeds are entirely dedicated to supporting these vital services in Laurens County.
